From "The Car is the Enemy of the City"
Here's a look at some of the reasons cars and people don't get along, from an essay called The Car is the Enemy of the City:
Cars are the enemy of the city because there are fundamental, irreconcilable, clashing needs of the car habitat in contrast to the needs of habitat for people.
- Cars are most happy when they can move at high speeds.
- They enjoy large asphalt, surface parking lots.
- Cars like ample building setbacks and a separation of homes from offices and retail.
- They like simple, homogenized, monotonous streets and neighborhoods.
- They prefer very low residential and commercial densities. They are helped by lots of lighting.
- And cars like being anti-social, as they are happiest when there are no other cars around.
